Italica (Seville, Spain): use of local marble in Augustan age

2010

This study concerns 51 marble finds made of “Cipollino verde” coming from the ancient city of Italica (north of the modern city of Santiponce, 9 km NW of Seville, Spain), the earliest Roman settlement in Spain, founded in 206 B.C. The aim of this work was to determine their provenance from Greek and Italian quarries or from local quarries worked in the Iberian Peninsula. Thin-section optical microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, bulk rock chemistry and O, C and Sr stable isotope analyses were carried out. Results were compared with literature data on “Cipollino verde” marbles quarried in southern Euboea (Greece), Apuan Alps (Italy), Almería, Extremoz, Seville (Spain) and Évora (Portugal). T…

The production cycle of lime-based plasters in the Late Roman settlement of Scauri, on the island of Pantelleria, Italy

2018

This paper deals with the archaeometric study of lime-based plasters found in the archaeological settlement of Scauri, located in the homonymous bay in the south-western part of Pantelleria Island. Since 1999, archaeological surveys have led to the recovery of the huge remains of a Late Roman settlement dating back to the fourth-fifth century AD. It is well known that the island of Pantelleria is entirely composed of volcanic rocks. Accordingly, the production of quicklime required calcareous rocks to be imported. Also, the selection criteria of the sandy aggregate are relevant and of interest to this study, to evaluate the achieved technological level. Within this context, a mineralogical …

Sicilia in Survey of Numismatic Research 2008-2013

2015

The contribution is a critical analysis of the scientific studies of Greek and Roman numismatics concerning Sicily and produced between 2008 and 2013. The examination reveals a growing interest in the age of the "signing masters", even if the number does not seem to decrease attention for the years between Dionysius and Timoleon and for the period of the end of the III century BC, when Sicily entered the orbit of Rome. There are numerous publications of coin finds and hoards. There is also a particular attention to antiquities, while one of the main poles of interest continues to be iconography.
